Name: Edmundo Castillo First Collection Launched: 1999 Best Known for: Architectural wedges and multimedia designs Bio: Born in 1967 in Puerto Rico, Edmundo Castillo had a fascination with art and design from an early age. During his time as a student of fine arts at Altos de Chavón School of Design in the Dominican Republic, Edmundo found his calling as a shoe designer. He soon moved to New York, developing a passion for shoes, and went on to work with Donna Karan on her footwear collections for men and women. After his eight-year stint at DK, Castillo joined Polo Ralph Lauren as a Senior Director. After a year at Ralph Lauren, Castillo returned to Donna Karan to design the men’s collections for the Donna Karan and DKNY lines. In 1999, Castillo began creating his own line of women’s shoes, and within two years was awarded the Perry Ellis Award for Best Emerging Accessories Designer by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. In 2012, Castillo received additional accolades as the Vanidades Style Icon Award for accessories Nowadays, Edmundo Castillo—a budding art collector with works from Anh Duong, Carlos Rodriguez and Peter Tunney in his collection—continues his eponymous line, in addition to his men’s line Casbia. Castillo also serves as the Creative Director of Italian women’s shoe line Via Spiga, and balances his time between New York and Milan. In February of 2013, Travel + Leisure magazine announced that they would be awarding Castillo with the their Design Award for Best Travel Shoes for the woven calf leather and elastic sneaker, “Emmanuelle”, from his Casbia men’s line.
