Afdal Khan displayed a solid all-round performance to lead Hillview College to a narrow two-wicket win over defending champions Vishnu Boys Hindu College in round one of the Powergen Secondary Schools 50-over League competition at Honeymoon Park, yesterday. It was expected to be a close match as Hillview won the title in 2013. Vishnu was dismissed for a modest 151 in 47.4 overs batting first. National youth players Kirstan Kallicharan and Jarlarnie Seales led the way for Vishnu, scoring 38 and 26 respectively. Nikolai Nyron grabbed 2/26, while Khan took 2/28 for Hillview. In reply, Khan, a former national Under-17 player, top scored with 37 as Hillview got to 152/8 with one over remaining. Jerome Gibbs contributed a valuable unbeaten 16 to help take Hillview over the line. Kallicharan (3/25) and Saurav Baliram (2/21) were the pick of the bowlers for the defending champions. In other matches, Fatima earned a ‘winning draw’ against Naparima and Presentation College (Chaguanas) defeated Princes Town West by ten wickets. It was a tough start in the premier division for St Mary’s College, as it went down by 132 runs to Carapichaima East. Meanwhile, ASJA Boys held on for a ‘losing draw’ against Barrackpore West.
