Affordable, accessible healthcare: At the top of my agenda! Today is Doctor’s Day. I take this opportunity to convey my wishes to the Doctors’ community who own the responsibility of saving lives and work selflessly towards it. They are the caretakers of the physical, psychological and social well-being of individuals and their families – a demanding job that gives them a special place in the society. I foresee a huge role for Doctors in my plan to improve the quality of Government healthcare service delivery, promote patient-centeredness, and increase the safety of care - without limiting the patients’ liberty to go to the service provider of their liking. My simple 5 point agenda when transformed into action will get our State to lead the way in healthcare delivery across the Country: Infrastructure: Highly trained and motivated medical specialists equipped with the right means and current and accurate information to deliver healthcare in the right place and at the right time will be paramount. Uncompromising Quality: There will be no scope for lapse when it comes to quality. Clinical and health system performance will be audited on a regular basis to eliminate any gap between quality objectives and reality. Patient-centered care: Patients (and their families), doctors and staff must work together towards goals of collaboration, empathy and cohesion – with constant engagement and dialogues. Accessibility: One of the key healthcare reforms that is close to my heart is facilitating greater access for people to appropriate health care resources and medical staff. Delivering health services at the right time without the distance, finance, and social or cultural barriers will help in distributing quality health services to every household in the State. Affordability: Due to lack of resources to pay the rising healthcare costs, many families are being driven into financial mess to receive the care they need. Years of inaction and ‘sugary’ coated actions by previous government has only worsened the situation. Effective steps will be taken to lower health care costs, assure more choice, and enhance the quality of care for the entire population. I hope that the medical fraternity supports me in realizing my vision for AP’s healthcare. Happy Doctor’s Day!
