Afghanistan: Several attacks mark start of Talibans annual spring offensive; expect further insurgent violence in coming weeks The Taliban on 12 May carried out several attacks to mark the commencement of its annual spring offensive named ‘Khaibar. At least ten people were killed and several others injured in a complex attack on a Provincial Justice Department building in the Police District 4 area of the city of Jalalabad (Nangarhar province, east); the incident began with at least three consecutive explosions after which three militants, who were armed with assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), stormed the building and clashed with security force personnel. Militants on the day also attacked security checkpoints on the outskirts of Ghazni (Ghazni province, east), killing at least three people and injuring eight others, while clashes were reported in Kunduz province (north), prompting the UN to restrict the movement of its staff. Meanwhile, rocket attacks targeted the capitals Kabul International Airport (KBL) and the US-operated Bagram airbase (Parwan province, east), though no casualties were reported in either incidents. A rocket attack at a market in Siagred (Parwan) killed two people and injured four others, while nine police officers were killed in an attack on a checkpoint in Sangin (Helmand province, south). There is a persistent and significant risk from insurgent attacks, which are likely to occur with a greater degree of frequency in the coming weeks as the Taliban offensive continues. Personnel should seek professional security support and ensure they are fully briefed on the prevailing threats prior to deployment to the country.
