Afikas Reflections - I have learned that the characteristics of ADHD are not easily visible physically but more of emotionally and that it might be hard for us to distinguish these characteristics or symptoms quickly because all these could been seen as just pure laziness or even as academic problems. At first, I used to think that children with ADHD have problems coping with stress and that they have to move around all the time in order for them to regulate their emotions. In my perspective, that is an acceptable way of regulating emotions and that this disorder was not too much of a problem. However, that is not the case after having to go through journals and articles regarding ADHD during this assignment and it is not easy to lead a normal life when you are diagnosed with a disorder. The impact that the child with ADHD may face in the classroom would be ostracization as he/she would be highly disliked by peers due to the poor social behaviours and adaptations. This would mostly likely lead to social isolation and this could worsen the condition of the child with ADHD as he/she may face depression due to not being able to feel accepted by the society. As a teacher, I would try my best to include the child during the activities and prevent him/her from being isolated by the peers in the classroom. It will be best for me to accommodate to the child’s needs and interests and allow him/her to succeed in class, with whatever adaptations or accommodations that are best suited for the child. One example would be having to make some organizational changes and instructional practice which would help in increasing the participation, motivation, task completion and even quality of work of all students, including the child with ADHD (Lougy, Rosenthal, & DeRuvo, 2007). With this, not only that it is beneficial for the normal children, the child with ADHD would also benefit from the adaptation and he/she would feel accepted in the classroom. Thus, preventing ostracization or social isolation from happening in the classroom.
