Afraid of the wind? But when he saw the strong wind he became afraid. And starting to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” (Matthew 14:30 NET) In this amazing story about realities of our physical world, Peter walks on water by listening to Jesus and sinks only when he starts being afraid of the wind. How does a person become fearful of the wind? We cannot see wind, we can only observe what the wind does. Peter saw that the wind is making a violent storm. In this continuous struggle between what we hear coming from Jesus and what we observe around us, it is so easy to focus on the things we see. Things we see are apparent, real, and tangible. We do not naturally observe unseen world to which even our natural world submits. We need those realities revealed, explained, and exemplified. If a life can be summarized by things that are tangible, real, and rational it is missing a spiritual component. Spiritual life does not make sense rationally and involves differing degrees of risk. Peters first step is a huge leap for a natural man. Who has ever heard of or saw a person walking on water? But, Peter was given a chance at impossible and look at the legacy he has left by stepping out. Step out Beloved
