African States Join Forces to Tackle Rising Gulf of Guinea Piracy Reuters (06/26/13) Musa, Tansa; Djoyum, Beaugas-Orain; Flynn, Daniel Central and West African nations will be working together to create a regional center based in Cameroon where the fight against the growing problem of pirate attacks by Nigerian gangs operating in the Gulf of Guinea can be coordinated. The increased piracy is threatening the shipping of commodities in the region, including cocoa, oil, and metals, and has caused insurance rates to climb. According to an agreement signed by regional leaders, the main purpose of the center will be intelligence gathering and research. Intelligence collected by the center will be shared among governments in the region. Chadian President Idriss Deby commented that "No country can withstand the growing challenges individually. That is why we agreed to put our efforts together to end the illicit activities in the Gulf of Guinea."
