African ministers responsible for minerals and development are meeting in Zambia and Zimbabwe to craft a policy document that will see the continent establishing a common minerals centre. The centre, to be called African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC), will help member states have a common plan on implanting the Africa mining vision to foster stability and cooperation in the minerals sector, facilitate integration in the mining sector, help member states in developing regulating frameworks on exploitation as well as ensure there is no exploitation of mineral resources which should benefit locals. The first extra-ordinary session of the 4th African Union Conference of Ministers responsible for Mineral Resources Development conference is being jointly hosted by Zimbabwe and Zambia in Victoria Falls and Livingstone. This is the second time the towns have co-hosted high profile events following the United Nations World Tourism Organisation last year. A statement released at the venue at Zambezi Sun Hotel in Livingstone Sunday said: Experts are meeting here to develop an institutional and sustainable framework for the establishment of AMDC. The objective is to discuss and ensure ownership of the Africa Mineral Development Centre whose functions will be varied including implementation of an African mining vision, fostering stability and cooperation in the minerals sector, facilitating effective and predictable integration, supporting member states in the mining sector and promoting social and economic transformation through mineral resources. The technocrats are debating on the legal statute about the centre, funding mechanisms and the issue of coming up with the suitable host country where the centre will be situated which is yet to be decided but Zambia is bidding to have the facility situated in the copper rich country.
