African red river hogs (Potamochoerus porcus), or bush pigs, are encountered in the forests of the Goualougo Triangle on a daily basis. Some scientists working in the region have referred to them as the vacuum cleaners of the forest. It is easy to see how such a nickname could arise, as groups which can number 50 or more individuals busily march through the forest with their noses buried in the leaf litter as they forage for food. Their preoccupation with feeding makes them easy to spy on as they unsuspectingly walk past us.
