African slaves in the Caribbean in an attempt to hide the worship - TopicsExpress

African slaves in the Caribbean in an attempt to hide the worship of their ancestral deities, from their Christian overseers, took different saints to represent their gods. St. Patrick came to represent Dambala, a river snake and the bringer of wisdom, whose wife was Aida the rainbow. Dambalas followers dress in white and participate in a ritual of river baptism. My band has recorded a song about Dambala , and I cut footage shot in the 1940s by the filmmaker, Maya Deren to make the following video. youtube/watch?v=RFVeHcQ2pis
