After 24 years of full-time police work it is time to call it a career. Today I go to work as a police officer for the last time. I started this path 28 years ago as a volunteer police officer for New Haven. It didnt take long realizing that yes, this was the career path for me. Over the years I was fortunate to serve in several rewarding roles. My seven years as a canine handler with one awesome dog named Magnum was probably the best of times for me. Overcoming the pitfalls of training a handler to the already trained and experienced dog was not as easy as one would think. Magnum would look at me on so many occasions like, come on dummy, keep up! In the end the team did work. We made many apprehensions, found lost persons, lost or stolen property, and a few bites along the way (Including me). Magnum was a partner that was dedicated and so protective of me. He was driven to work and please me until his final moments here on earth. I also had the opportunity to serve in many leadership roles and special job assignments that were afforded me. Serving the members of the department and the citizens of New Haven as Chief of Police for 11 years was a pure honor. Hopefully, along the way I made a difference in someones life or somehow impacted things for the better. It was a team effort in most cases which is what made the job possible to do. Some of those team members have come and gone and other will remain and continue working hard for New Haven. I will cherish the memories of those that I worked with and shared the good and the bad times together. There will forever be a bond that cannot be broken. Finally, this career in law enforcement could have never been possible without the support of many friends and family. From my Mom, brothers and sisters, to my wife Misty and then the kids. All of you have always been there for me in the good and not so good times that this job brought. For my loving wife, I am left speechless as to what even to say right now but when I do it will be in person and not here. I retire today excited about the new opportunity which lays before me but again I will stress that I will forever cherish the friendships and accomplishments we made along the way. Thanks for the memories.
