After 3 million souls, One would have thought The likes of BENJAMIN ADEKUNLE will never die..We will all pass on someday. Here is an interview granted by Major Benjamin Adekunle of the Nigerian Army to a German Reporter, Randolph Baumann, of STERN Magazine on August 18 1968 in Port Harcourt. STERN: What is happening to the European Humanitarian Assistance programs which were authorized through your government? ADEKUNLE: In the section of the front that I rule—and that is the whole south front from Lagos to the border of Kamerun—I do not want to see the Red Cross, Caritas Aid, World Church delegation, Pope, Missionary, or UN delegation. STERN: Does that mean that the many thousands of tons of food that are stored in Lagos will never get to the refugee camps in your section of the country? ADEKUNLE: You are a sharp one, my friend. That’s exactly what I am saying. The aftermath were attacks by the Nigerian forces on hospitals and medical personnel in Biafra that included French volunteers. Children were starved to death as a result of blockades by the Nigerian Army. Most of those who survived were malnourished, suffering from Marasmus. A French doctor Bernard Kouchner was appalled by what he saw in Biafra. He questioned how the Red Cross was unable to render medical aids to the Biafrans who were indiscriminately murdered by the Nigerian forces. Kouchner subsequently rallied other French doctors in solidarity with the people of Biafra. They brought Biafra to the attention of the World, and decided that a new aid organization that would ignore political/religious boundaries and prioritise the welfare of victims was needed.
