After Beijing, the state visit continued to Nanjing, where The Royal Couple, among other things, visited the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall in order to commemorate the Danish citizen Bernhard Sindberg who saved thousands of Chinese citizens’ lives during the Nanjing massacre in 1937. Sindberg came to China at the age of 26 seeking adventure, and eventually found a job as a watchman at the Jiangnan Cement Factory, run by a Danish firm. His arrival coincided with the Japanese invasion in December 1937. During the visit, Margrethe II met with a survivor of the massacre, Su Guobao. The 87-year old man told the Queen that his family stayed inside the refugee camp started by Sindberg, and it was with his assistance that his whole family survived. At the Memorial Hall, Her Majesty watered a Peace Tree – honouring the great humanitarian efforts by Bernhard Sindberg during the Nanjing Massacre. She also laid down a yellow rose, named by Sindberg’s hometown as Forever Nanjing, Sindberg Yellow Rose in 2004. The flourishing roses represent the long-lasting friendship between China and Denmark.
