After CBS News aired a story saying Tulsa Police has 3400 untested rape kits, I looked into it deeper. Heres the rest of the story: Every rape kit TPD detectives want tested, has been tested and done so quickly, so there is no backlog of current cases that need to be tested for a pressing case or new case. However, in cases where it’s a domestic situation or the guy claims it was consensual or the victim refuses to prosecute or something like that, where they can’t make a case… those kits are still sitting there because they never throw them out, just in case something changes (like a victim later decides to prosecute). Some of those date back to 1990s. The thinking now is to go ahead and test those cases and see if the DNA links to other cases and might help solve some unsolved ones so TPD is trying to get grant money to do just that.
