After Earth with Will Smith and his son is one good God damn movie.... executive producer by will and jada and directed by m. Night shalamon? I didnt know he directed that his last couple movies kind of fell short of the sixth sense... but he is a good ass director and little will is turning into one fine actor himself.... having two multi-talented and highly successful parents doesnt hurt one bit.... I like the movie for multiple reasons good action a nice sci-fi twist a moral critique of the potential dangers of how we treat our planet plus an emotionally charged discourse On father son relationships coupled with lessons on facing ones fears and coming into manhood... very good story about family struggles... I also like it because its stars are two African Americans and it takes place outside of traditional stereotypical roles for black Americans... this is something Ive come to appreciate from actors like will Smith and denzel Washington... they stretch the limits of the imagination of what black people can be... at first I was a bit upset with these movies that feature black people but have any element of black culture or racial identity ... a lot of movies from denzel and will you could put a white actor in their place and it would make little difference to the film... but Ive come to understand that we as a people must move beyond the paradigm of blackness... we must transcend the ideal that this is black and thats not black.... being black is more then the so called black dialect of slang featured in the fresh Prince as opposed to say Carleton or the vernacular of say What Samuel Jackson has made famous... it is more then a location I,e. The hood or ghettos or the type of locations you may see in a Tyler Perry film... we do that but we are so much more then that... and Ive come to appreciate films the depict blacks outside of these constraints... that said I loved it and if you havent seen it check out After Earth
