After I had gone to bed, Alasdair heard loud banging coming from the front door and a skittering sound like somebody was trying to pick the lock. He turned on the light and looked out but there was nobody there. The sounds did not stop when he looked out, only after a few minutes. They did not start up again. This morning, I found a clever device attached to the door. It consisted of a coat hanger that had been bent outward to make a long loop, a golf ball taped to the end of the loop, and a long piece of red yarn tied to the hanger near the golf ball. When hung on the door, a person hiding behind a car in the street could manipulate the yarn to make the golf ball bang against the door and the skittering was caused simply by the wire hanger moving against the brass door handle. I coiled up the yarn and left the device on a bush near the sidewalk with a note suggesting either black thread or fireline. :)
