After The Last Chair Violinist released in 2008, prison officials - TopicsExpress

After The Last Chair Violinist released in 2008, prison officials took a more aggressive approach in stopping SPM from making any more albums. In 2008 they gave him a major case for developing an inappropriate relationship with a female guard, an older white woman who opted to quit her job rather than testify against the artist. Three months later, in 2009, SPM’s cell was searched and a digital recording device was found, along with a chip that contained music. He was demoted to level 3 status (no TV, no phone, no contact visits, commissary restrictions, recreation restrictions.) For eleven months he remained level 3 till officials got a tip from an inmate (a snitch) who told them SPM was still recording. In early 2010, Carlos Coy got up to use the restroom but the toilet wouldn’t flush. He quickly checked to see if the faucet was working but no water came out. He knew what was about to happen. They cut his water off so that he couldn’t flush anything down the toilet. That meant they were about to raid his cell. As soon as he turned around a team of six guards were at his front door, yelling for him to lay down. They rushed in, handcuffed him and put him in a holding cell while they searched his cell. They found a bundle of money in a coffee bag, another digital recording device and six computer chips full of music. Forty-eight hours later he was shipped to Iowa Park, Texas and locked in High Security Segregation. There, he did four long years with the state’s most dangerous inmates. In 2014 he was released from High Security and sent to the Pack One Unit. There, he told officials that on September the 30th “The Son Of Norma” would be released and that he had no control of that. “Even if I die today,” he said, “that album will come out. I’m letting you guys know ahead of time because I don’t want to be punished when it hits stores.” But when the album dropped, SPM was given another major case for “running a business within a Texas Institution.” Once again he lost his level 1 (no TV, no phone, no contact visits, commissary and recreation restrictions.) The question is, will the son of Norma rise again? Will he be able to withstand the retaliation of another album dropping? Only time will tell. Till then we have another masterpiece to enjoy, a masterpiece that came with a heavy price.
