After William McKinleys death 113 years ago today, Vice President - TopicsExpress

After William McKinleys death 113 years ago today, Vice President Theodore Roosevelt hurried to Buffalo, where McKinley had been shot on September 6 and where he died. McKinley died at around 2:15 a.m. on September 14, 1901. Approximately 12 hours later, Theodore Roosevelt was inaugurated as the 26th President of the United States. Roosevelt would go on to serve the rest of McKinleys term (1901-05) and then be elected in his own right in 1904, serving that term from 1905-09. He could certainly have run again in 1908 but decided to leave the presidency, designating Secretary of War William Howard Taft as his chosen successor to run in 1908. (Check back tomorrow morning for more on Taft!). James R. Garfield, son of President and Mrs. James A. Garfield, was a member of Theodore Roosevelts cabinet, serving as Secretary of the Interior from 1907-09. James R. Garfield is seen with Roosevelt at far left in the second photo.
