After a 51-14 loss to Minnesota, Iowa has not arrived at a crossroads. Its been at the crossroads for three years. All the things true about the Hawkeyes in the disappointing 2011 and 2012 seasons are true now. The running game is dependent on better line play than Iowa has been able to develop; it has been awful this year. Coach Kirk Ferentz – just forget his coordinators – chooses not to incorporate a quarterback-run game into his system, despite having quarterbacks on the roster who can do so. Special teams is mediocre. Explosive plays – on either side of the ball – are few. Recruiting for those explosive players is mediocre. In his post-game press conference, Ferentz seemed to think Saturdays loss was “falling victim to believing our own bullcrap” following a 49-7 win over Northwestern. Thats rich. Iowa got too confident? Id argue the Hawkeyes dont think nearly as highly of themselves as they should. But that embedded humility keeps Ferentz in the captains chair.
