After, a long time thinking and being awake early. I want to state what I feel sincerely. By its sheer nature, Fashion - Cannot be ethical! Karl Lagerfeld said something like Fashion is ephemeral, unfair and unjust. Fashion is about, price, competition and quality. It relies upon the needs of economy and in an ever more globalized world, I refuse to buy into the concept of Ethical African Fashion. Because you can go to Central Africa and find some people doing hand work, does not mean your endorsement of them makes what you do Ethical. Because in the end you are still subject to the whims of the market, stores and boutiques. What is the return? They were already there, its like going to Nigeria today and saying you discovered it. For Africa and African designers to succeed, they need to be on the same playing field as the European and international designers. I do not believe in a special compartment for African Fashion. Africa always needs saving, but most of the time it needs saving from people who think they are saving it. I have argued with people for years, Africa needs quality materials, machinery, knowledge and know how and partnership with the Best in the world. Also, it needs to feed off of other areas geographically to create the best. I see an Africa that delivers an international positive message, quality, competition and freedom. This can only come from inspirational and aspirational thinking. But also aiming to create items of desire and ultimate quality. The best!
