After a mammoth 3 year investigation at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, one of the largest animal research centres in the world - the USDA identified only 7 infringements of regulations the in a 7 year period examined. 5 of the infringements were for minor or technical issues which did not affect animal welfare, while the other 2 only affect one animal each (one clearly an unfortunate accident). The relatively small fine reflects both this and the actions that UW have taken to correct problems when they were identified. Contrary to the claims of animal rights groups the USDA report actually highlights how well cared for animals at UW are, with the number of problems tiny considering the thousands of researchers and hundreds of thousands of animals housed in UW facilities at any one time. It also highlights how rigorous the USDA inspection system is. You have to wonder how many problems the USDA inspectors would have found if they took a look around the facilities and records of your average hospital or care home. news.wisc.edu/22620
