After a tough loss to Boswell where Jr Loya burned the cord for 30 points, the Men’s Varsity basketball team travelled to Glen Rose the weekend of December 12 to compete in the Lion’s tournament. In a strong effort against Tolar, the Owls never trailed and snake bit the Rattlers 52-35. Loya again led all scorers with 23 points. Erik Carr added 10 points and helped control the boards along with Ty Brown and Connery Peters. A stiff wind blew in from Kennedale when the Owls met up with the Wildcats in second round pool play. With good outside shooting and seemingly tireless running, the Cats beat the Owls 68-41. Point guard Garrett Chretien had to sit out with a strained hamstring, and the offense, spearheaded by Loya’s 21 points, just couldn’t overcome a strong Kennedale performance. Bent, but not broken, the Owls took the fight to Fort Worth Christian and dismantled them with their most convincing win of the year, 60-37. Chretien returned to lead the Owls and with three players scoring in double figures, the Owls easily handed the Cardinals a lopsided loss. Loya had 28, Connery Peters a season high 15, and 10 for Brown respectively. The win put Joshua in the championship game of their pool play against China Spring, a strong opponent known for its basketball program. Tied at halftime, the Owls outscored China Spring 13-5 in the third quarter and then played solid defense for the 45-36 win. The win not only gave the Owls the first place trophy in their division, it also gave the Owls their first tournament championship in a decade. The team of Loya, Peters, Chretien, Brown, Ethan Ervin, Mason Farley, and Joe Lutka also set a precedent in that with their sixth win of the season, they have won more games than any men’s varsity basketball team in eight years and more wins than the last three Owl teams combined. Looking to keep a good thing going, the Owls took their tournament winning ways to Lake Worth to finish their non-district schedule. Buoyed by their recent success, the Owls leapt over the Bullfrogs 55-31. For the first time this season, a player other than Loya led all scorers. Freshman Connery Peters ripped down 11 rebounds and poured in 19 points. Loya added 14 and Chretien 11. The Owls head into district play against Aledo on December 19 with a 7-6 record. Having only one 1 district game win in 4 years, the Owls are looking forward to reversing that trend and putting Joshua back onto the Texas basketball map.
