After all the planning, politics and promises, the old monkey - TopicsExpress

After all the planning, politics and promises, the old monkey wrench hits the gears again. Projects promised to Calgary for decades face long delays, because oil prices are down. Premier Jim Prentice and his ministers make no distinction between projects that are merely good and those that are vital. Everything is under review. Everything could be stalled for years. And we hear this astonishing statement from Steve Buick, spokesman for Health Minister Stephen Mandel. “ The (cancer centre) as it’s currently scoped might not be able to go ahead right away, but we might be able to find some other way to go forward with it. We’re looking at all the options.” What options would those be? Finding good elves to build it for free? There is no other way to build this cancer centre. Either they find the money and get it open when they promised, or they don’t. The need is dire. Calgary cancer patients have to run all over the city for different elements of their care. The current Tom Baker Cancer Centre is jammed and notably inferior to Edmonton’s Cross Cancer Institute. Despite our excellent doctors and staff, cancer is outracing the system.
