After an awesome meal on the mountain we began thee real work of getting the orphanage ready to go. Mark and Kathy Davis were the leaders and Brenda and I served at their disposal. The orphan in Mexico was any child who was missing one or more parents. Our first group of kids were some who came down from the mountains for a better education along with various orphan children from around the area. We started with 15 kids, mostly boys and when they came one of our first chores was delousing them. What a stinky job! We were not in such an economical way where we could afford the latest in delousing medications so we did it the old fashioned way using kerosene. After delousing all of deloused as well because we all had what I will call a sympathetic itch. Lice are common in most 3rd world countries but now it is becoming a serious problem here in the US. By the way, it seems like the smell of kerosene lasts for many days. Our chores included making breakfast and lunch for the kids. One of their favorite breakfasts were pancakes and the boys competed to see who could eat the most. It was hilarious because it seemed that some of the little guys could out consume the big guys. Most of you have probably figured out by now that when you are taking care of 15 kids you have an awesome task. Just cleaning the house was a huge job even though each of the kids took part in it on Saturdays. Laundry well you can only imagine the pile of clothes and all of that on a ringer washer and a clothesline. The Davis family were definitely called to that work and it was a pleasure working with them. Church was awesome and what a delight when we were able to see the kids become believers. My what talent, as they learned how to play instruments and sing, these children were simply amazing. Our next post will share how we learned Spanish and began preaching in the villages. Until tomorrow...
