After being a member of this group for roughly a week, I thought I would give an extremely newby interpretation of this budget radio. My mother asked what I wanted for christmas and considering my other hobby, astronomy, is rather expensive at this point, I decided to ask for something else I have always had an interest in. So, thanks to SHTF, I came across the UV-5R. After initially charging the radio, I was completely lost as far as its operation. I stumbled across how to listen to broadcast bands and with a quick google search, I was listening to noaa weather radio. So far, I thought pretty cool...at least enough so that I delved further into google to find miklors site. This site opened up the radio and put me quite frankly into the realm of what I though ham radio was. I listened to conversations and noted some semantics unique to this method of communication. I google my local ham radio club and got a list of all repeaters within a twenty mile radius, not expecting to hit even a quarter of them but to my surprise, I manage to hit them all...listening only. Tonight at 8:00pm CT., I listened my very first meet on 2 meters. I was amazed by how similar to meeting was to my astronomy meeting and it was organized accordingly. In conclusion, I have got to say that the two UV5Rs my mother gave me are without a doubt the very best gift I have ever received. My interest has been sparked and I have visions of how I might integrate my two hobbies during star parties that are in different locations. My next goal is to study for the technician exam and with six months of that, taking the general as well. One question though, having two radios, is it best to bring them both into service or leave the second boxed up? I am also considering purchasing the BF-F8 in the very near future. Any constructive thought would be greatly appreciated! Thank you all for accepting me into this group!
