After coming up short in the Philippine Cup finals against the Beermen, the Alaska Aces intend to go all the way this time with D.J. Covington. A proud product of Virginia Military Institute, Covington will have a big shoes to fill in the absence of former Best Import awardee Rob Dozier, the Aces’ original choice but failed to get a release from his current club, Dubai-based Al Shabaab. But Covington could give the Aces the needed inside presence they badly need, having been a two-time Big South Defensive Player of the Year in the US NCAA. In his senior year with the Keydets, Covington averaged a team-high 20.1 points on an efficient 59 percent shooting from the field on top of 106 blocks to finish his stint with a career total of 272 rejections—a VMI record.
