After finally seeing The Dallas Buyers Club last night I think that trans community might have been a bit hard on Jared Leto. As for having a transgender actress play the role. Obviously Rayon was in the very early stages of transition and no mention is made of any medical transition at all at the point. If anything the criticisms should go to the writers and filmmakers for the creation of the character and not making Rayon more along in her transition. Rayon in particular was created as a character to give Ron a dramatic challenge to his prejudices while facing disease. The real Woodroof didn’t have any particular Rayon in his life it could have been easily done. So the real issues was not weather a transgender actress should have played the part but the fact that the filmmakers did not create a fully fleshed out transgender character where a transgender actress COULD play the part.
