After finishing rounds at the hospital today, I decided to head to Warner Robins to try to do a bit of Christmas shopping. Since I havent had much of a chance to shop so far this season, I was hoping that this excursion would serve a two-fold purpose: (1) actually getting some gifts bought and (2) putting me in a festive mood rather than the Grinch mode I have been in lately. All in all, it turned out to be a bust. Shoppers were varied. There were those who shopped with a vengeance. Heaven help you should you get in the way of them and their shopping cart! There were others that appeared to be totally out of their element, a look of total confusion on their faces, and others, a look of frustration on theirs. Some, who appeared to be on an outing with either friends or family, actually seemed to be enjoying themselves. In one store, I actually selected an item I thought would make a nice gift, but when I saw the length of the check-out line, I put it back on the shelf and left. By the third time someone told me I looked exhausted, I decided it was best that I go home and put my feet up. I did manage to buy wrapping paper and tape for the gifts that I have yet to buy though! Personally, I think that in all the hustle and bustle and crazy pace of the Christmas season, we somehow fail to remember the real Reason for the season. Too often, we spend money we dont have on gifts that go unappreciated or unused. We race mindlessly from one event to another. In the midst of all the clutter though, Jesus is there. One of our family traditions is attending communion services on Christmas Eve. Since we will be in Athens this year, I think I will direct my energies toward finding a church there that has such a service and looking forward to celebrating the birth of our Savior with my family.
