After giving this some thought, at some point Id like to write a fantasy epic a la GRRM, Mark Lawrence or Anthony Ryan told from the viewpoint of women who fight for those they love in a male-dominated society. Instead of taking up the sword they use cunning and manipulation... The husband and I were talking the other day about how women who are seen excelling in roles as caregivers or behaving in manners feminine in a patriarchal society are often looked down upon for being weak. What lengths will a mother go to in order to protect her children? A sister her brother? An old woman her community? Why must women be portrayed as men, before we accept them as possessing heroic qualities? Now tell me of strong female characters you perceive as essentially feminine? I can think of Jacqueline Careys Phèdre for one. Id also look toward Ellen Ripley. And the lady Galadriel, though she does not have a prominent role.
