After having read the article tracing the developments of portrayals of Elizabeth I, I am reposting the image of The Rainbow Portrait attributed to Isaac Oliver, with some amplified information. There is conjecture that the symbols of the armillary globe, the cloak embroidered with eyes and ears, the serpent of wisdom, and the rainbow and its Latin inscription Non sine sol iris (there is no rainbow without the sun) were drawn from the poet John Davies Hymn to Astraea. This in turn leads to the conjecture that this portrait was commissioned by Robert Cecil to incorporate in a masque staged in 1602 that included a shrine to the goddess Astraea. These festivities were held in honor of the Queens visit which proved to be one of the last grand state visits of her reign.
