After having started the climb up from Ouray the previous - TopicsExpress

After having started the climb up from Ouray the previous afternoon, it was time today to tackle a road that had been recommended to me by more than one Colorado native; the Red Mountain Pass. And upon getting to Silverton I found out why; it was simply spectacular. I later found out from another rider during a drink break that the US550 between Ouray and Silverton was also called the Million Dollar Highway and regarded as one of the best riding roads in the country. With scenery like this after each twist and turn it was impossible to stop just falling more and more in love with Southern Colorado. On my way down to Albuquerque, New Mexico I also made it a point to stop off at the Mesa Verde National Park as a South African rider I had met in Yellowstone had told me he envisioned it to be the highlight of his trip. Unfortunately I underestimated the sheer size of the park and had to really move quick through it before closing time. Did manage to see a couple of different types of Native American dwellings both underground and entire cities carved into the cliff face. The most notable incident of the day was, not once, but twice passing a lone figure pushing a stroller whilst on the back-country roads. Regrettably I didnt stopand talk to him and kept wondering who this guy was, what his story was and what he was doing. As things often do, it came full circle to finding out about Kenyon via social media and learnt that he as an American who was walking across America ! So, with these thoughts in my mind and a nice hefty bee sting to the chest while riding with an open jacket, it was Farmington, New Mexico for the night. Not sure if this is the same Farmington as The Shield but Id like to think so.
