After hearing about it, reading about it and seeing only snippets for all of these years, Im finally getting around to watching the ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL serial in its entirety, thanks to Cape TV. From what Ive seen so far, its reputation as one of the best serials ever made is well-deserved, particularly considering the special effects which were not only ingenious for the time (1941) but are still surprisingly effective. Tom Tyler makes for a grim-as-death Captain Marvel, about as far from the smiling, easy-going hero of the comics as its possible to get and not be starring in a serial about Black Adam, Captain Marvels nasty predecessor. With scenes of the Captain machine-gunning fleeing tribesmen in the back and hurling screaming guys through the air like straw-filled dummies--which I guess is what they really were--a fan-boy argument could be made that Billy Batson is actually channeling Black Adam. Still...the serial is entertaining as all hell and Im anxious to watch the other chapter-plays Cape TV has available.
