After losing our boulevard tree in 2012, we were excited to get notice this spring that we were due for a new one so we can finish our front-of-the-house landscaping. Now the city says theyre not planting one -- not even in the same place of the previous one -- because of water and gas lines. When would the city plant one? When the water line is relocated as part of the 20-year plan, the forestry guy said. When will that be? 2024-25, the woman at the streets department said. I wish I were making this up. I have run on miles and miles of St. Paul city streets and I have not seen curbs as bad as ours. And Ive taken note where the streets, curbs, and utilities have been redone. Lets just say people make a lot more money on average in those neighborhoods than ours. What a joke. Well plant our own damn tree where the old one used to be. Itll be a wonderful tree, our tree. And if the city rips it out someday, the sap will be on their hands.
