After months of research we finally were able to put a name to a picture. Thanks to Kevin Jarrosak we found out about this soldier - Alexander H. Kapitanski. He was quite a guy - the famous flag man who met presidents and a Pope. From a newspaper clipping I came across, Alex was born March 23, 1923 in West Rutland VT. He quit high school to go into WW II. After the war he went back to school and graduated WRHS in 1946. He later attended the University of Southern California where he received his certificate in cinematography. He was a combat photographer during WW II whose primary mission was to go behind enemy lines to photograph enemy positions and gun emplacements. The military newspaper Stars & Stripes once featured a photo of him bringing in a German soldier he had captured behind the lines while photographing a position in Normandy. He is one of the 609 West Rutland Veterans that will be on the WW II Memorial to be dedicated August 15, 2015.
