After much consternation, and deploying every organizational, politic, ass kissing, and militant trick I know, Ive decided to leave the Arts Council for Long Beach as a board member. The organization refuses to address its lack of diversity, its insider dealing, its lack of confidentiality/integrity, and its neither responsive or proactive to public and community concerns. in addition, the entire process gives me heartburn. historically, this has been a corrupt quasi-community/municipal organization (the very reason I signed on to the board), and it shows no signs of changing. I generally dont walk away from a fight with so much at stake (representation and public funds), but these folks, wow, they make the most rabid members of the tea party look like jeffersonian diplomats.
