After nearly two weeks of pleasant weather, winter will return in full force to Israel beginning Friday. A major cold front – one that paralyzed Turkey this week – is set to arrive in Israel over the weekend, releasing its harshest cold, wind and rain at the beginning of next week. However, the weekends cold front is just a prelude to what is expected next week. A second, even colder and harsher front will arrive in the middle of next week, and is likely to bring snow to large parts of the country, including Jerusalem, said forecasters. Shabbat and Sunday are expected to be the rainiest days this weekend, with temperatures plummeting close to the freezing mark in many parts of the country. Floods are expected in some of the lower wadis and valleys in southern Israel, and residents of cities which are prone to flooding during rainstorms were cautioned to be ready. Rain will taper off late Sunday, but remain intermittent on Monday and Tuesday – before the next front comes in, the forecasters said. Israel Electric Company officials also took the opportunity to warn Israelis not to approach fallen electrical wires which may blow down during storms – even if the electricity appears to be off. Last year, an unusually severe snowstorm left large parts of the country paralyzed for days; it is not clear whether forecasters are predicting the upcoming weather front to be quite as extreme.
