After nine years, another business leaves Elgin. This is the second business in the last three weeks that is gone. But, this time, this firm is moving to just a hop away to Hampshire. That village agreed to remove the real estate taxes owed to them for their first three three years. We may have not wanted to match that. I dont know if our economic development contractors (who are also responsible for business retention), the Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce, knew anything about this or even tried to find them an identical, suitable place in Elgin, Maybe they worked hard to keep them here. If they did not know anything about their needs, then it is just fate. However, if they did know about this, they never let the city council know. Instead, we just get to read it in the newspaper.
