After opening its doors in 1981, Kahilu Theatre has become a favorite place for generations of families to gather to celebrate and experience the arts. To help ensure this Waimea theater is part of the community for years to come, it is undergoing extensive renovations, which began last summer. Former Gov. Neil Abercrombie announced in May the release of $1.5 million in capital improvement grant funds for the design and construction of renovations at the theater. Improvements include replacing the 200,000-square-foot building’s roof, flooring and curtains; putting a new surface on the stage; painting; upgrading the reception/box office desk and bar area in the lobby; upgrading the electrical and sound systems; and building a black box — a simple, somewhat unadorned performance and rehearsal space — in the back wing of the theater, said artistic and managing director Tim Bostock. Critical are also several American with Disabilities Act improvements. For example, 14 seats will be taken out of the back east side of the theater to create a special, wider entryway into the the theater and configured seating for people with disabilities, particularly those who use wheelchairs. Marketing and development director Dayva Keolanui said “this project helps the building match what’s going on inside.” She explained how Kahilu Theatre is striving “to create a flourishing multidisciplinary arts center, where community, creativity and inspiration thrive and is accessible to all.” Subscribers follow the link for the full story by WHT reporter Carolyn Lucas-Zenk.
