After reading bout Adrian Peterson and some other troubling child discipline articles. I never got beat as a kid. I never pulled my pants down to get spanked, I never got hit with a spoon, or a belt, or a switch. I feel as though my parents were always proactive to discipline instead of reactive. I always got the same lecture anytime we went anywhere. Whether we were going to a family gathering, to the mall, a restaurant, or people coming to our house. We were told, You are to be on your best behavior. Use your manners, say please and thank you. If someone asks you if you want something, say yes please or no thank you. If you get a gift say thank you. Be polite and behave. I dont care what the other kids do, you are to behave. (This is all paraphrasing but I heard it over and over every time we went anywhere in one form or another.) It got to a point that my sister and I learned that as soon as we heard one of my parents say, You are to be on your best behavior, we knew what was coming and would say, We know. Be polite, use our manners, say please and thank you. And then Mom or Dad would say, I know you know, but were going to tell you anyway. and they told us any again. I have never had any fear of one of my parents physically hitting me ever. Have I done things wrong and felt fear of what may come? Yes. Havent we all? But I have never feared any physical abuse from them what so ever. At any time. Im not saying spanking your kids is wrong and I dont have any kids so take this for whatever its worth. If I ever have kids I will NEVER hit my kids, just as my parents never hit me.
