After reading on Robert OByrnes blog today ,I had to share the wonderful restoration of the Dawson Mausoleum in Monaghan. When I originally seen the vandalised statue, I thought its restoration was beyond the best craftsmen. However I was wrong and I am delighted to see the statue is beautifully rebuilt. The brickwork and stone detailing of the main structure is secured and the magnificent dome is reinstated after a replacement roof in the shape of a pyramid was placed on the structure in the 1840s which had collapsed by the 1960s. The Mausoleum was built to commemorate Lady Anne Dawson who died in 1769 and contains a life sized marble sculpture of the deceased, her husband and son gathered around an urn that contained her ashes. The domed building that contained this sculpture was designed by the architect James Wyatt and was situated in the demesne that once surrounded Dartrey. This sculpture, a vitally integral part of the original concept and design, was designed and carved by Joseph Wilton. Over the years the building became derelict and the sculpture was vandalised, with pieces of the statue being broken off and stolen. A recent appeal had located the head of one of the statues in Dublin. I do hope that these efforts of those involved in this project are recognised and awarded. In one of my previous posts I had featured a piece about Dartrey House davidhicksbook.blogspot.ie/2014/05/the-lost-castles-of-monaghan-dartrey.html
