After recently purchasing new tires for my car, and seeing an ad - TopicsExpress

After recently purchasing new tires for my car, and seeing an ad for Polaris newest ATV with airless tires, I began to wonder what happened to the airless tire research and development for highway use. Michelin developed the Tweel airless tire about a decade ago, which are sometimes used on skid steers and forklifts, etc. The problem with highway use is the open spokes which can catch debris, unbalancing the tires as well as hazards from debris being thrown out at highway speeds, damaging other cars or property. Also, the open spoke design delivers a lot of noise on the road. Bridgestone Tires is developing its version of the airless tire, and Polaris is soon to release a new top-line ATV with military grade airless tires. Just think! No more leaky valves, nails and screws, or spare tires to worry about! No more checking tire pressure or paying for air at one of those vibrating compressors at a gas/convenience store!
