After seeing Selma (which was an awesome movie) I realized that there are many stories that have not been recorded accurately. My own son James Wilson and his parents struggled more than forty years ago with an institution established to teach Deaf children had no Black Deaf teachers and no Deaf Administrators and was opposed to teaching Deaf children American Sign Language. I want to publicly thank all the Deaf community who supported our struggle to demand an educational program to meet our sons needs and teach him about Deaf culture. In particular I want thank Dr. Barbara Kannapell, Dr. Betty G. Miller , Janet Delap, Eileen Paul , Willard Shorter and the Shiloh Silent Mission , Shirley Childress Johnson ,CCAD , Dr. Robert Davila along with so many others who supported the Concerned Parents Task Force to work for Change at KDES and MSSD located on the campus of Gallaudet University. Below is the letter announcing the first ASL class at KDES as a result of our efforts. Watch for more.
