After seeing Twelve Years a Slave, my students understand why I think Django can only be viewed as a Tarantino caricature of American slavery. A diverse range of African (human) experiences and emotions are conveyed in the narratives, novels, short stories, and poetry of Black abolitionists--we need only read them. My students read Solomon Northups narrative, and the movie enhanced their understanding of the narrative, but they know it is not a substitute for Northups perspective on his own life. (And knowing is half the battle.)
