After seeing what looked like a ship wreck on sonar images of the seafloor made by MBARIs seafloor mapping AUV, MBARI geologists decided to investigate the area last week. Heres a short video clip of what they saw when they dove down with ROV Doc Ricketts. As you can see, the visibility is low, with lots of sediment suspended in the water, making it all the more mysterious. The Umpqua II was a barge from Reedsport Oregon that grounded near Moss Landing in 1982, then was towed offshore and ultimately sunk. She is in 1,662 meters of water, lying on her starboard side, and lightly dusted with sediment.
