After the Expulsion NIT, KU ready to accommodate students if government agrees MEERUT FALLOUT HAROON MIRANI Giving a hope to the suspended students, colleges and university authorities in Kashmir say that they can easily accommodate the students in case the government transfers them to Kashmir. Around 67 students of Swami Vivekananda Subharti University are facing uncertain future as they continue to remain suspended after the Indo-Pak cricket match, in which they were alleged to have cheered for the Pakistan team. Although the police has rolled back the sedition charges against the students but according to reports other charges remain. Their career is stake as continue to face charges under IPC sections 153 (a) and 427 for ‘causing disharmony’ and for ‘mischief’, respectively. There have been some reports that all charges have been dropped but the police authorities of Meerut quoted by media organizations have denied that. The students and their parents are clueless about what to do next as according to them going back would endanger their lives. “Under this threatening atmosphere we don’t want to go back there, we ask the state government to bring us back to the state,” said Muteeb ul Majid, a student of BBA IInd year. “We have colleges here too and we want them to arrange our migration from Subharti University to Kashmir University, may be that can save our career and our life.” “For us the life of our son is more important than career and I won’t let him go back,” said a parent of one of the students. Officials wishing anonymity due to the sensitivity of the case say that there are more than enough seats in Kashmir to accommodate the distressed students. “We can easily accommodate all the B. Tech students,” said an official at National Institute of technology (NIT) Hazratbal. “If needed, we can even conduct extra classes for them and all of it is easily manageable.” NIT has an added advantage of having number of vacant seats in various classes. “We admit students from outside too, and in various classes the outside students have left the course midway creating vacancies,” said the official. “So there are adequate vacant seats to accommodate even the second year B. Tech students.” Citing the example of last year, the officials said that despite having the seat strength of 632, the college could only fill 500 seats. “This left more than 100 seats vacant,” said an official who deals with the admissions at the college. “Similarly during previous years too, the college couldn’t fill its entire quota, so there are vacant seats in almost every year and semester.” Similarly, officials at Kashmir University and Islamic University have also expressed their interest in rehabilitating the students. “Yes we can easily do it,” said a KU official. “In fact we have better infrastructure than their colleges.” “Most of the students have gone there under the Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS) meaning that they are from lower income group,” he said. “This was a golden chance for them. But with so much of politics going on, forget career their whole life is at stake.” The officials said that the batch of students is exposed all over India. “Let us say that the university takes them back for now, but they will become a target sooner or later as they were highlighted a lot,” said an official who has also studied in Uttar Pradesh. “Meerut is a sensitive place where rightwing parties rule the roost. Government shouldn’t take risk in such a situation. If anything untoward happens with any Kashmiri boy or girl, this would lead to a hard to control situation back home.” “We can accommodate the students in BBA and other courses that are available with us with ease,” the official said. “We have dozens of colleges where BBA is taught, so it is not a big deal for us to accommodate all of these students,” he said. “We can even accommodate some of them in their home districts as BBA is taught in many district level colleges.” The officials however said that the decision has to taken up by the government. “We are ready, it is only th
