After the PK review conversation with my friend last evening, I - TopicsExpress

After the PK review conversation with my friend last evening, I did not want to spend money and time on it, but due to curiosity, I watched the movie in 1 hour. (played it at 2X speed in VLC media player. I was in a moral dilemma because I did not want my money to go to Dawood Ibrahim who had funded this anti-Hindu movie. But to overcome my guilt of paireisee, I purchased some music tracks from iTunes by emerging artists) Coming to the movie: I could not help but agree that it was indeed predominantly, selectively against a certain religion i.e Hinduism. More than 3/4th of the message of the movie was a mockery of Idol worship & mythology. So, here are some more conversations I had with few other friends. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Friend1: Abbey yaar. Agreed it is anti Hindu movie. But it is just a movie, for entertainment. Instead of appreciating the acting & entertainment, you are simply complaining. Me: Tell me which is your favourite movie? Friend1: It is 3-idiots movie. Me: Why? Friend1: What a wonderful message it conveyed. Did you know that it changed the lives of so many students. It changed the way people looked at education system. Me: So you mean to say that movies can influence people (manipulate minds). Friend1: Well, yeah. They can. Me: That is exactly what even I had been saying. Movies can be used to convey messages as well as create propaganda. In this case, it is a subtle propaganda against Hinduism. By selectively attacking the customs & ideologies of 1 religion, the movie has shown that Hindus are fools and everything they do are unscientific. So, please dont harp over the rhetoric that movies are just entertainment. They can influence people and affect society. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Another conversation: Friend2: PK has hit the nail hard. He has pointed out how unscientific mythology and idol worship are. I pity those illiterates who look up to Idols & mythological stories. PK is logical & great. I will apply his principles in my life. Me: ok. Nice to know that PK was able to explain you something which impressed you so much. Who was PK? Friend2: He was an Alien. Me: Do you believe Aliens exist? Has science proven it? Friend2: How does it matter? What is important is the message he has conveyed. Me: Great. Do you think whatever the movie tried to convey using PK could have been conveyed without using PK? Friend2; Maybe. But it would be difficult. You see, Although PK was an Alien, he looked like a human & dressed like a human. He talked, ate, ran, danced. All those gave color to the story and through which the movie was able to convey the message using PK. I hope PK makes more such movies and conveys more messages. I will buy his posters and stick in my room for motivation. Me: My dear friend, that exactly is the concept of Idol worship. Friend2: What do you mean? Me: What is important is the principles which each idol epitomizes. For example, the movie mocked at Lord Hanuman. But that is the Idol which is looked up to when one needs motivation in aspects like fitness, health, strength etc. The movie mocked Goddess Lakshmi. But it is the Goddess one looks up to when one needs motivation in aspects like finance, wealth etc. Such motivations & principles (of ethics & morals) can be provided even without the help of idols, but as you said, just like how PK added color to the message to convey it easily to masses like you, the same logic applies to idol worship also. In short: If you are impressed with PKs way of conveying message of how unscientific idol worship is, then it means you are actually agreeing with the concept of idol worship itself.
