After the Republican-led Texas Legislature slashed funding for womens health programs in 2011 in order to prevent Planned Parenthood from providing services, approximately 70 clinics (most of which were not Planned Parenthood) across the state closed. The dismantling of a decades-in-the-making safety net system that was providing cost effective health services to low-income women was devastating. Though Im proud of our efforts to restore funding in the last session, unfortunately, the new system is not serving as many women, nor is it as cost effective. Some are considering streamlining the new programs by consolidating the different programs in place. Those working in the system are concerned that this would be premature and could result in even more setbacks for serving women and their families.
