After the earthquake last week, everyone is thinking safety. Here are the top 7 items we recommend for your emergency kit: 1. Water -Make sure to have extra water, or a water purification system. With a good filter you can take water right out of the stream and be confident that you wont get sick. Tablets/drops are also great to have and take up very little space. 2. Freeze-dried/Dehydrated/Canned Food -Always a good idea to have extra food that you can access. Youre better off to have food that you dont need to cook, or can be easily prepared with a single burner stove in case the power/gas is out. 3. Single Burner Stove and Fuel -The stove can be used to boil water or cook a meal in any situation that youre without power. 4. Headlamp(s) -You can never exaggerate the usefulness of a headlamp. If the power is out, headlamps provide a practical and energy efficient light source. 5. First Aid Kit -In a disaster, a little cut can become a big problem. Even a simple first aid kit will help prevent infection and help keep you healthy and safe. 6. Multi-tool/Leatherman -A Leatherman/multitool can be used to turn off appliances, make repairs, and open your canned food (the worst thing is struggling to open the ravioli when youre really hungry). 7. Photocopy of your personal documents and extra cash -People dont usually think of this last one. However, in a disaster (flood or fire) your personal documents can be lost or damaged. It is very useful to have extra copies of your passport, Carecard and drivers license. -Other personal documents include emergency contact information and geographical information of your area. All of these items should be kept in a durable, waterproof bag/container and be stored conveniently where you can access them quickly and safely. Remember, this is just a quick list and there are always many more steps that you can take to keep you and your family safe, but only if you are proactive! All of the items above (except #7) are available in store.
