After the major publicity for Michael Keaton in BIRDMAN, I eagerly saw it and was hugely impressed. Imagine the longest, most applauded tracking shots in film history (Scorseses GOODFELLAS, Branaghs HENRY V, John Woos RED CLIFF, and before them all, Hitchcoks ROPE). This outdoes them all. Using an ultra-smooth handheld camera, Mexican director Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu delivers a tour de force in which the entire film gives the illusion of having been shot in one continuous sequence. Anyone who truly loves the magic of filmmaking will be stunned. Michael Keaton (after a long time away) delivers the performance of his career as an actor who once made superhero BIRDMAN movies and is now trying to make a comeback on Broadway in his adaptation of a Ray Carver short story. Keaton, of course, was BATMAN in two films. Keaton and Inarritu will almost certainly have Oscar nominations, along with Edward Norton as a dificult Broadway costar. But there might be others--for Emma Stone and Naomi Watts.
