After the suicide of 22-year-old Ryan Allison, Salt Lakes CITY WEEKLY takes an in-depth and alarming look at the current state of inmates with mental health needs at the Utah State Prison. The story highlights the lack of effective treatment options within the corrections system, leading to a significant increase in the use of powerful medications and solitary confinement as tools to treat offenders with mental illness. As the state presses forward with criminal justice reform and relocation of the prison, we have a chance to dramatically rethink the way we work with criminally-involved individuals. Hopefully, we can take this opportunity to refocus the system on providing them with the treatment and support they need to avoid prison altogether, or be an active, productive, and contributing members of the communities when they come home.
